GBR Headquarters Shortlist Reaffirms Derby’s Role – But Delivery Now Matters

Derby’s position at the heart of Britain’s rail future has been reaffirmed once again, with Becketwell and Midland House both shortlisted for the Great British Railways (GBR) headquarters.

On one level, this is a positive and expected step. Derby was named as the home of GBR in March 2023, and since then the city has remained central to the programme’s development. The latest shortlist brings helpful clarity and keeps momentum moving in the right direction, even if the wider process has naturally taken time to progress.

From Ford & Stanley’s perspective as a Derby-based talent services company specialising in rail recruitment , this matters in very practical terms. We see first-hand the strength of demand for talent across engineering, digital, project delivery and leadership – and the extent to which GBR is already shaping expectations around future opportunity in the city.

For many candidates and employers, GBR represents more than a policy announcement. It signals long-term investment, career pathways, and a stronger, more unified rail sector. That potential is real, and Derby is well placed to benefit from it given its established rail heritage and deep industrial base.

Both shortlisted sites reflect that strength in different ways – Becketwell through regeneration and future city growth, and Midland House through its direct connection to the operational railway at Derby station. Either would be a credible home for a national headquarters.

There is now a clear opportunity to turn long-standing intent into delivery. The final decision, expected before the end of 2026, will be an important milestone not just for Derby, but for the wider rail industry and its talent pipeline.
